What it's like

Driving the Honda Civic Type R here

A Nürburgring record-holder you can use every day — a turbo VTEC hot hatch with a manual gearbox, huge grip and genuine track pace.

In Malaysian terms: it seats 5, it has 5 doors, and the gearbox is 6-speed manual, so there is no clutch pedal to think about while you are also adapting to driving on the left. It runs on RON97, the yellow pump, which is available everywhere and costs a fraction of what you pay at home. Every rental leaves us with a full tank and a loaded Touch 'n Go card in the holder.

Be mindful of ground clearance. Malaysian side roads have unmarked speed bumps and steep drainage lips, so plan your parking before you set off and take village roads gently.

Where to take it

Best drives for the Honda Civic Type R

These are the routes we'd point you at with this car specifically, and why.

This is a road that rewards a small, sharp car over a big fast one. You will spend an hour turning, braking and turning again, never above fourth gear. A mid-engined Porsche or a hot hatch with real front-end bite will feel joyful here; a wide V12 will feel like you are parking it around every hairpin.
