Multi-day road trips

Take it out of the city for a week

Malaysia is a better road-trip country than almost anyone expects: good expressways, cheap fuel, and a coast, a mountain range and a UNESCO port all within half a day of each other.

Weekly rates from RM 5,000 depending on the car

Porsche Panamera available for visitor self-drive hire in Kuala Lumpur, the car we typically use for multi-day road trips

A multi-day hire is a different product from a weekend in a supercar, and we price and prepare it differently. Rates drop sharply past three days and again past a week. Mileage allowances go up. And we prepare the car for distance, not for photographs — tyres, fluids and a full service check before it leaves.

The classic loop from Kuala Lumpur is five days: north to Ipoh on day one, Penang for two nights, then down to the Cameron Highlands via Simpang Pulai, and home through Tapah. About 900 kilometres, entirely on good roads, with the two best hill climbs and the best food in the country. We have written it up in detail in our three-day itinerary post, which extends neatly to five.

Going east is the other option and it is quieter: over the Karak to Kuantan, then up the coast to Cherating and the Terengganu beaches. Longer, emptier, and better between March and September before the monsoon.

For any trip over 400 kilometres from Kuala Lumpur, tell us the route. It changes what we recommend — we would put you in a Macan or a Velar for the highlands and a Panamera or i7 for the coastal runs, and we would rather have that conversation before you book than after.
